Brian Boru: Ireland’s Legendary High King

Brian Boru, born in 941 AD, remains one of Ireland's most celebrated High Kings. Hailing from royal bloodlines in the northern region of Munster, Brian ascended from King of Munster to High King of Ireland. A devout Christian, he was a lover of music and chess.

During his reign, monastic settlements flourished, attracting the attention of marauding Vikings who coveted the precious treasures stored in these monasteries. Determined to rid Ireland of Viking incursions, Brian moved the seat of the High King from Tara to the Rock of Cashel. From this stronghold, he strategized his defense against the Vikings who, fortified by allies from the Isle of Man, Orkney Islands, and Scandinavia, made their stand at Clontarf. The pivotal Battle of Clontarf commenced on Good Friday, April 23rd, 1014. Although too aged to fight, Brian’s two sons led the Irish troops to a decisive victory, expelling the Vikings from Ireland. Tragically, Brian himself was slain during the battle.

Our Chess and Draught Sets are made of a lead free Pewter and comply with EU, FDA, BS and Proposition 65 standards. The Metal content is 92-95% Tin with the balance made of Copper and Antimony.

Our Irish Pewter Chess and Draughts boards are made of Medium Density Fibre board.

Our Pewter Chess sets are packaged in a hard board presentation box with the pieces set in protective foam.

Our Pewter Draught/Checkers sets are boxed in brown card board and the pieces are wrapped in bubble.
