D18 BRIAN BORU CHESS SET
Brian Boru is Irelands most famous High King. Born in 941 AD he was of Royal Irish blood from the northern part of Munster. He first was made king of Munster and then elected High King of Ireland. He was a Christian who loved music and chess.
As the Monastic settlements began to flourish under his rule they became targets for marauding Vikings as many of the monasteries stored precious metal chalices and book covers. Brian moved the seat of High King from Tara to the Rock of Cashel. From here he prepared to rid Ireland of the Vikings. The Vikings decided to stand their ground in Clontarf, beside their stronghold< Dublin. They had many Viking supporters come to their aid from the Isle of Man, Orkneys and Scandinavia. The battle of Clontarf started on April 23rd ( Good Friday ) in 1014. Brian was to old to yield a sword, but his two sons commanded the Irish troops who were well schooled in the art of combat. The Irish won the day and rid Ireland of the Vikings, but during the battle Brian was slain.
